The project composes a report that presents the key findings of Reuters Institute Digital News Study in Finnish from the point of view of Finland. The overall study is commissioned by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism to understand how news is being consumed in a range of countries. In 2014, in addition to Finland, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Denmark, United States, Brazil, and Japan were involved. In 2020, there already were 40 countries taking part into the study. The themes covered are, for example, the use of different news media, trust in news, and paying for news online.
Background
The project is conducted annually. Reuters Institute at the University of Oxford publishes the international report while COMET research centre at Tampere University compiles a Finnish country report that analyses the same data from the point of view of Finland. In addition, COMET also produces a country page about Finland in the international report and produces a slide set that illustrates the main findings from the Finnish point of view. COMET has provided these materials every year since 2014.
Goal
The project produces current and internationally comparable knowledge about the news media and their use. This knowledge is useful when discussing news media as a part of democratic society and as a business sector.
