Checklist for exchange students

The following checklist is for exchange students that will start their exchange studies either in the autumn semester (August - December) or in the spring semester (January - May). After you have completed your preliminary study plan and submitted your application for exchange studies, please note the following next steps that are required from you. There are five stages in the checklist:

  2. After you have been admitted by the International Mobility Services
  3. After you receive a follow-up instructions from the International Mobility Services
  4. Before and after your arrival
  5. After the semester has started

1. Before you have been admitted

  1. 1

    Apply for exchange studies by 30 April (autumn) or 15 October (spring)

    Get nominated by your home university first and then apply for exchange studies!

  2. 2

    Apply for student housing in May (autumn) or October (spring)

    Apply for student housing before your admission decision (excl. ISEP students)

2. After you have been admitted, next steps

    Apply for residence permit in June (autumn) or October (spring)

    The residence permit for studies is required only from non-EU/EEA students

  2. 2

    Get a proper health insurance in June (autumn) or October (spring)

    A comprehensive health insurance is recommended for all exchange students

  3. 3

    Sign your housing agreement in June (autumn) or November (spring)

    We recommend you to take the first offer you will get (student housing is very limited)

  4. 4

    Submit your question for the pre-arrival info (if you wish)

    You can submit your question in June or in October-November

  5. 5

    Make preliminary travel plans for your arrival

    Plan your arrival according to our arrival windows in August (autumn) or in January (spring)

3. After you have been contacted by the International Mobility Services with the follow-up instructions (June or November)

    Register with the university in June (autumn) or November (spring)

    Wait until you will be invited to register with the university online

  2. 2

    Activate your TUNI account in June (autumn) or November (spring)

    Wait until you will be invited by email to complete this step

  3. 3

    Set up the MFA in June (autumn) or November (spring)

    Setting up the MFA for your TUNI account is a requirement

  4. 4

    Pre-arrival information session in June (autumn) or November (spring)

    Highly recommended for all, next pre-arrival info is on 13 November 2024

  5. 5

    Join our mobile app in June (autumn) or November (spring)

    You will receive an invitation link to our app to meet other exchange students

  6. 6

    Pay the TREY fee in July (autumn) or December (spring)

  7. 7

    Reply to your student tutor in July (autumn) or December (spring)

    Replying to your personal student tutor is a requirement

  8. 8

    Register in Sisu for courses in August (autumn) or December (spring)

    Registering for courses in Sisu by the deadline is a requirement for all

  9. 9

    Complete the mandatory information security course

    The Moodle course on information security must be completed on time

  10. 10

    Order your student card in August (autumn) or January (spring)

    Check from Sisu first, if your TREY payment has been approved

  11. 11

    Start the online part of the DVV registration

    The DVV registration must be started online, in August or January

4. Your journey to Tampere and after your arrival

  1. 1

    Arrive in Tampere during the arrival window

    Arrive in Tampere on time in August or January, late arrival is not allowed

  2. 2

    Get your starting kit from ESN FINT or INTO after arrival

    Get your starting kits from ESN FINT or INTO on time as these will run out!

  3. 3

    Attend our Welcome Week in August (autumn) or January (spring)

    Attending our Welcome Week is a requirement for all students

  4. 4

    Check the Welcome Week recordings in Moodle

    Some info sessions might be published online, most will be not

  5. 5

    Signing exchange documents in August (autumn) or January (spring)

    Your exchange documents will be signed during the Welcome Week

  6. 6

    Collect your student card in August (autumn) or January (spring)

    Collect your plastic student card, takes about 2 weeks to be ready after your order

  7. 7

    Respond to our Welcome Week's feedback survey

    You will receive a link to our feedback survey with a chance to win a prize!

  8. 8

    First courses will start in late August and early January

    Teaching period I starts in August and teaching period III in January

5. After the semester has started

    DVV registrations on campus in August (autumn) or January (spring)

    The mandatory DVV registration is organised on our campuses in August and January

  2. 2

    Register for teaching period II or teaching period IV courses

    Note the registration deadlines for courses starting in the teaching period II or IV

  3. 3

    Submit your Finnish identity code in October (autumn) or March (spring)

    Required for all exchange students, see Finnish personal identity code

  4. 4

    Migri's right of residence in October (autumn) or March (spring)

    The registration is for EU citizens only and only if applicable

  5. 5

    Attend the Bye bye Tampere! in November (autumn) or April (spring)

    We hope to see you at our farewell event for exchange students

    Respond to our exchange feedback survey
