Glossary of internationalisation

Bilateral student exchange 

The exchange places of university-wide bilateral student exchange agreements (in the Mobi-portal: Program: Bilateral agreement / University) are open for application to bachelor+master degree students of the university. The exchange places of faculty-level bilateral agreements (in the Mobi-portal: Program: Bilateral agreement / Faculty) are limited to students of a specific field.

ECIU University 

The European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) offers many opportunities for students in international learning environments. Tampere University is a member of the network, and as a student, you can participate in its activities.

ECIU Challenge 

The core of ECIU University is its challenge-based approach – a model where students, teachers, and researchers work together with companies and society to solve real-life challenges. The challenges are listed on the ECIU website, and registration for them also takes place there.

ECIU Micro-module 

Micro-modules are offered through the member universities of ECIU University and can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of months to complete. Through micro-modules, students can learn more about national and international societal issues related to sustainability themes.

ECTS credit 

One credit at Tampere University corresponds to one ECTS credit. The ECTS system (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is used in exchange studies between European higher education institutions.

Erasmus+ student exchange 

The European Union’s education, youth, and sports program supports European cooperation and mobility in higher education. Erasmus+ program exchange places are usually subject-specific and can be utilized by students in the relevant field. In the Mobi-portal: Program: Erasmus+ Student Mobility (SMS). Exchange destination

A foreign higher education institution with which Tampere University has a cooperation agreement for student exchange.

Exchange ambassador

A student recruited by the International Mobility Services who shares their experiences from their exchange destination for one week on the @taugoesglobal Instagram account. You can apply to be an exchange ambassador in the spring when applying for student exchange.

Exchange report

A report by a student who has been on exchange about their experience. Exchange reports are published in the exchange report database for the benefit and enjoyment of students planning an exchange. Read more: Exchange reports

Grant (travel grant, mobility grant, travel support…) 

A grant is a general term for funding various lengths of study periods abroad. The grants awarded by the International Mobility Services of Tampere University have different names and amounts depending on the type of mobility they belong to. In addition to basic grants, some mobility types offer support for accessibility, family, and green travel. Read more: Funding studies abroad

Internationalisation at home

Internationalisation opportunities without going abroad, such as international student tutoring. Read more: Go international at home

Internationalisation module

A study module that can be included in the degree certificate, consisting of study achievements that meet the learning objectives of internationalisation. The minimum scope of the module is 20 credits. Read more: Internationalisation module

Internship abroad

The opportunity to complete a mandatory or voluntary internship abroad as part of your degree. Finding an internship requires initiative, and it is advisable to start preparations well in advance. The possibility of funding depends, among other things, on the location of the internship and its suitability for the degree. More information: Internship abroad

ISEP student exchange 

An international student exchange programme offering numerous exchange destinations, especially in the United States, for bachelor+master degree students. In the Mobi-portal on its own tab “Exchange possibilities (ISEP, QSEP, north2north)”. Read more: Student exchange programmes and networks

Long study period abroad or long mobility

A study period that lasts at least as long as the semester at the exchange university. See also Student Exchange.

Mobility-Online system

The mobility management system used by Tampere University, where every exchange student applies for an exchange place and handles exchange-related documents during their exchange period.

Mobility-Online portal

Also known as the Mobi-portal. A view of Tampere University’s student exchange destinations. In Mobi, you can search for available exchange destinations. Read more: Student exchange destinations

Terms in the Mobi-portal exchange destination search

  • Study field: This shows the field you select in the portal’s search field “Open for TAU study field”. It means that the exchange destination is open for applications from students in this field. The study field field does not list the study fields of the exchange university.
  • Program: The type of exchange agreement, which particularly determines the scholarship related to the exchange destination.

Nordplus, Nordlys student exchange

Nordplus is a program of the Nordic Council of Ministers that supports, among other things, Nordic student mobility. Exchange places for bachelor+master degree students. In the Mobi-portal, Program: Nordlys (Erasmus+) and Nordplus network. Read more: Student exchange programmes and networks

North2north student exchange

An international student exchange program that focuses particularly on universities located in the northern regions of the globe, and its exchange destinations are open to bachelor+master degree students. In the Mobi-portal on its own tab “Exchange possibilities (ISEP, QSEP, north2north)”. Read more: Student exchange programmes and networks

QSEP student exchange

A Canadian student exchange program that offers exchange destinations at universities in the province of Quebec for bachelor+master degree students. In the Mobi-portal on its own tab “Exchange possibilities (ISEP, QSEP, north2north)”. Read more: Student exchange programmes and networks

Short mobility period or short-term mobility 

A study period, for example, in an intensive course at a foreign university. The duration of mobility is usually between one week and one month, depending on the course provider. Read more: Short-term study options abroad

Student exchange

A semester-long (or up to an academic year) study period abroad at a partner university of Tampere University. The duration is determined by the length of the semester at the exchange university.

Transcript of records

A transcript of records is a report of the courses and modules you have completed. The transcript of records from Tampere University is a mandatory attachment to the student exchange application. Students who have been on exchange receive a transcript from the exchange university, based on which they apply for credit transfer for exchange studies in Sisu.
