These are described on the Information about studies tab of the study unit under prior requirements.When you have been admitted to the studies, you must enrol separately via the Sisu information system for the implementation of the unit of study and, for example if set, for a practise group of your choice. You will receive instructions on how to do this by e-mail after you have confirmed your acceptance of the study place by paying the required fee.

Groups and subgroups, rings, fields, ideals, homomorphisms, quotient groups and rings, polynomials of single variable.

After passing the course the student - possesses an ability of abstract thinking - recognizes and understands basic algebraic structures such as groups, rings and fields - understands the content of the fundamental theorems of abstract algebra and is able to prove them if necessary

<h2>Prerequisites</h2>25 credits of basic courses in mathematics is a recommended prerequisite for this course. In addition, completion of the Matrix Analysis course is also very much recommended. <h2>Compulsory Prerequisites</h2><ul><li>Discrete Mathematics, MATH.MA.210, 5 cr</li></ul><h2>Recommended Prerequisites</h2><ul><li>Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning and Number Theory, MATH.MA.250, 5 cr</li><li>Matrix Analysis, MATH.APP.410, 5 cr</li><li>Linear Algebra, MATH.MA.410, 5 cr</li></ul>

The course is based on the material presented during the lectures, but the following books are all suitable for further reading: Lauritzen, N., Concrete abstract algebra. Rotman, J., First course in abstract algebra.Dixon, M.R., Kurdachenko, L.A. and Subbotin, I.Y., An Introduction to Essential Algebraic Structures

In the autumn 2024 implementation the students are expected to self study the course by utilizing the contents found in Moodle.
