Core content<ul><li>The basic properties of the &nbsp; &nbsp; most common engineering alloys and their metallurgical background</li><li>Difference between steel &nbsp; &nbsp; grades and subsequent properties</li><li>Classification of aluminium &nbsp; &nbsp; alloys and their properties and use</li><li>Classification of stainless &nbsp; &nbsp; steels and their selection to typical applications </li><li>Material parameter defining &nbsp; &nbsp; sheet metal &nbsp;formability</li><li>Use of standards in &nbsp; &nbsp; material selection</li></ul>Complementary knowledge<ul><li>Difference in forming &nbsp; &nbsp; behaviour between steels and aluminiums</li><li>The material properties &nbsp; &nbsp; behind sheet metal formability</li><li>Testing formability of &nbsp; &nbsp; sheet metals</li><li>Factors affecting &nbsp; &nbsp; machinability of metal alloys</li></ul>

After passing the course the students will be familiar with the most common engineering alloys, understand their structure-property relationships as well as the factors affecting their selection and use in different engineering applications. They will understand the importance of material standards and thus, can &nbsp;combine their own material knowledge and subsequent standards while selecting metals and alloys for use. The students know the material parameters which are important in sheet metal forming and how the formability of sheet metal is tested in practice, basics how to classify and select stainless steels by their corrosion resistance, and differences in aluminium alloys.
