Core content<ul><li>Applications and requirements of biosensors. </li><li>Principles of molecular recognition in different &nbsp; &nbsp; biosensors. </li><li>Detection methods: electrodes, optical sensors, &nbsp; &nbsp; intracellular sensors, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensors and other &nbsp; &nbsp; sensor types. </li><li>Miniaturization and &nbsp; &nbsp; biocompatibility. </li><li>Examples of single cell measurements with &nbsp; &nbsp; biosensors. </li></ul>Complementary knowledge<ul><li>Light microscopy</li><li>Principles of electrochemistry, operation &nbsp; &nbsp; principles of optical sensors. </li><li>Principles of cellular level measurement &nbsp; &nbsp; conditions.</li><li>Micro ElectroMechanical systems &nbsp; &nbsp; (MEMS)</li></ul>

After successful completion of the course the student will understand the physical operating principles of biosensors. The student knows the basic terms and definitions, and understands the biology of the sensing elements and specific molecular recognition principles. &nbsp;The student is able to give examples of different biosensor structures and is able to understand and analyse measurement circuits and amplifiers that have been used with them. The student understands the limitations of the sensors. The student can list different biosensors and their application areas.

<h2>Prerequisites</h2>Cell biology and biochemistry studies help understanding the biological part of biosensors and their use.<h2>Recommended Prerequisites</h2><ul><li>Microsensors, BBT.MND.701, 5 cr</li></ul>
