Competence Module in Responsible Business and Sustainability, Open University Studies 

Description The module focuses on core themes and issues related to corporate responsibility and sustainability in business, such as business ethics, stakeholder management, responsibility reporting, environmental responsibility and sustainability practices in various kinds of organisations. The studies include various learning methods, such as lectures, essays, group work, and exams and the study topics are illustrated with practical case examples. The module includes both lecture and independent study options. Objectives Having completed the module, the student recognises and understands the elements of responsible and sustainable business. The student understands the relationships between social, environmental, and economic issues in business and is familiar with the challenges related to their interlinkages. The student knows the theoretical underpinnings of business ethics, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability. The student is able to identify and apply tools for organisational accountability and responsible business practices. Course units in the study module Competence module Responsible business and sustainability, 20 credits, consist of four course units of 5 credits. Students apply to each course unit separately, meaning you can complete all or only some of the courses. If you complete all the course units, you can apply for an overall grade of 20 credits of basic studies. Competence module Responsible business and sustainability include the course units below. These studies do not require prior studies. However, please, note that it´s strongly recommended to start this module by the course KAT.VAST.202. Regarding the other courses of the module, they can be completed in any order, but we recommend that students follow the numerical order.  Completion methods and implementations The implementation periods and completion methods of the course units vary. The same course unit can be offered several times during an academic year. The courses may have different completion methods, such as lectures, online teaching, or independent study, you enroll to one completion method e.g KAT.VAST.202 Lectures or KAT.VAST.202 Online teaching.Teaching language is English. Courses KAT.VAST.204, 206, 208 can only be completed in English. Course KAT.VAST.202 can be completed either in English or Finnish. Take a look at the 2024–2025 implementations below. Via the link, you can get more detailed information about application deadlines and implementation times. Please also note that the implementations have their own internal schedules, for example, as regards teaching and deadlines for handing in coursework. The following implementations will be organised in the academic year of 2024–2025 (links will be updated in June 2024): <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/business-ethics-lectures">KAT.VAST.202 Business Ethics (Yritysetiikka), Lectures</a> 7.9.–12.10.2024 Please note that the lectures have a attendance requirement. Please note that this is a lecture course. The lectures are not streamed or recorded and students are expected to participate in all lectures. In order to complete the course students are required to participate to the lectures and complete the course in English. This course consists of a book exam and written assignments. The exam is electronic and done in the exam rooms on campus. The exam can be booked according to your own schedule within the course dates. Thus, there will be no fixed exam date. OR <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/fi/tule-opiskelemaan/yritysetiikka-verkko-opetus">KAT.VAST.202 Business Ethics (Yritysetiikka), Online teaching</a> 23.10.–31.12.2024 This is the independent online course for Business ethics. You can complete the course in English or Finnish. OR <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/fi/tule-opiskelemaan/yritysetiikka-verkko-opetus-0">KAT.VAST.202 Business Ethics (Yritysetiikka), Online teaching</a> 8.1.–12.5.2025 This is the independent online course for Business ethics. You can complete the course in English or Finnish. This course consists of a book exam and written assignments. OR <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/fi/tule-opiskelemaan/yritysetiikka-verkko-opetus-1">KAT.VAST.202 Business Ethics (Yritysetiikka), Online teaching</a> 13.5.–31.7.2025 This is the independent online course for Business ethics. You can complete the course in English or Finnish. This course consists of a book exam and written assignments. <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/sustainability-reporting-lectures">KAT.VAST.204 Sustainability reporting, Lectures</a> 23.10.–8.12.2024 Please note that the lectures have a attendance requirement. You can be absent from class once. Absence is replaced by a separate task. Lecture courses have groupworks and teaching focuses on discussion. The lectures are held at least partly on the University campus. Recordings of the lectures will not be available for this course. The language of instruction in the course is English. Coursework and other course performances are done in English. <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/business-society-and-nature-independent-project-2">KAT.VAST.206 Business, society and nature, Independent project</a> 2.9.–11.10.2024 This is an independent project. The course can be completed in Moodle independently according to the students' own schedule. The course includes readings, recorded lectures, videos, and a Moodle discussion. Final evaluation conducted through a final essay. OR <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/business-society-and-nature-lectures">KAT.VAST.206 Business, society and nature, Lectures</a> 13.1.–3.3.2025 Please note that the lectures have a attendance requirement. You can be absent from class once. Absence is replaced by a separate task. Lecture courses have groupworks and teaching focuses on discussion. This is a lecture-based course. The students are required to attend and participate in the lectures, and submit/complete the class assignments provided by the teacher. Evaluation through final essay. OR <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/business-society-and-nature-independent-project-1">KAT.VAST.206 Business, society and nature, Independent project </a>10.3.–25.5.2025 This is an independent project. The course can be completed in Moodle independently according to the students' own schedule. The course includes readings, recorded lectures, videos, and a Moodle discussion. Final evaluation conducted through a final essay. OR <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/business-society-and-nature-independent-project-0">KAT.VAST.206 Business, Society and Nature, Independent project</a> 19.5.–31.7.2025 This is an independent project. The course can be completed in Moodle independently according to the students' own schedule. The course includes readings, recorded lectures, videos, and a Moodle discussion. Final evaluation conducted through a final essay. KAT.VAST.208 Sustainable business practices, Online teaching 24.10.–31.12.2024 This is the independent online option of the course, which comprise of completing online assignments according to the students own schedule. The grading is based on the individually written essay. Thus, there is no exam. There will be a final deadline for the essay but it may be turned in earlier as well depending on your own schedule. OR KAT.VAST.208 Sustainable business practices, Lectures 5.3.–16.5.2025 Please note that the lectures have a attendance requirement. You can be absent from class once. Absence is replaced by a separate task. Lecture courses have groupworks and teaching focuses on discussion. This is the lecture option of the course, which comprises of taking part to lectures and completing individual and group assignments. Some of the course units may include an electronic EXAM examination. The exam must be taken in an Exam room on one of the Tampere University’s campuses, the University Consortium of Seinäjoki or the University Consortium of Pori. <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/studying-0/student-assessment-and-examinations/instructions-students-use-exam-system" target="_blank">Please see the instructions for students on the use of the EXAM system.</a> There is also possibility to an Exam visit.
