Data Science, Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering

Tampere University

Make big sense of big data

Big data and data-driven methods are at the centre of modern computer science, statistics, computer engineering, and complex systems research, putting large-scale data, mathematical modelling and computer simulations at the front of an interdisciplinary attempt to describe reality. Data science is key for a quantitative understanding of complex techno-social phenomena, allowing us to make predictions and even steer systems of diverse origin (social, economic, biological) towards desired outcomes in the face of uncertain information. Applications of the field are wide and range from scientific research to data analytics in several fields of industry.

Experts on analysing large-scale data are needed for solving challenging quantitative problems such as: the automated understanding of text documents, conversations and social media content; creating intelligent search engines; finding data-driven insights into complex phenomena in society, the economy and global culture; creating data-driven solutions for medical and biological problems; and enabling self-driving cars and autonomous robots.

Tampere University offers three related specialisations that involve the analysis, modelling, prediction, and computation with big data: the Data Science (MSc) specialisation and the Statistical Data Analytics (MSc) specialisation, which focus on computational and statistical algorithms for data mining and machine learning, and the Signal Processing and Machine Learning (MSc Tech) specialisation, which focuses on engineering accurate predictive machine learning models.

The Data Science (MSc) specialisation features similar topic areas as the Statistical Data Analytics specialisation, with the Data Science (MSc) specialisation placing more emphasis on algorithmic and computational aspects of data science and artificial intelligence.

Data Science (MSc) will help you understand data analysis as a tool and master the necessary related skills, such as data cleansing, integration, modelling and prediction, and interactive exploration of data and models. You will learn methods ranging from probabilistic approaches through efficient data mining algorithms to flexible deep learning with neural networks. You will also learn to present data analysis results to decision-makers with descriptive summaries and visualisations.

Data Science (MSc) is one of the specialisations in the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering.
