The Master’s Programme in Security Management and Politics (SAFER) educates experts who specialise in either Security Governance or International Security. Depending on their major, students graduate with a Master’s Degree in Administrative Sciences, MSc (Security Governance) or Master’s Degree in Social Sciences, MSc (International Security).

A path to public management and societal security

The Security Governance specialisation is designed for students with a background in social sciences who aspire to become experts in public management, societal security and security policy. This programme equips you with the expertise to manage and govern security in diverse environments—be it international, national, or local. Whether you aim to work in security organisations, public agencies, or the third sector, this specialisation will prepare you to address the challenges of a hybridised society.

With a strong focus on governance, leadership, and security management, you'll gain the analytical tools necessary to understand, assess, and improve organisational and societal security practices. The programme also emphasises solving complex societal problems, enabling you to contribute meaningfully to both the public and private sectors.

Interactive learning and policy-relevant analytical skills

SAFER emphasises interactive on-campus teaching, guidance, and learning. Students enhance their analytical and professional communication skills through essays, presentations, policy-relevant and evaluation reports, as well as briefing papers. With guidance from the members of the faculty, students prepare a master’s thesis addressing a pertinent research puzzle in security governance.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Security Governance specialisation leave with a versatile skill set and a wide range of career opportunities in public management and organisational development, security governance, leadership, and policy-making.
