BMT-73256 Biodegradable Polymers Laboratory Course, 5 cr
Additional information
This course is part of the master's studies and is meant for students studying biomaterials or tissue engineering as their major. This course is mandatory for the students who will be doing their master's thesis in this field. This course won't be arranged for less than 10 students. If the number of students needs to be limited, the students with more studies from the field of biomaterials or tissue engineering will be prioritized.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, student is able to prepare samples of biodegradable polymers. Student knows how to work in clean room conditions. Student has examined polymer degradation by hydrolysis test series and mechanical properties and can perform different characterization methods to study biodegradable polymers. Student can calculate results, collect them and analyze their meaning. Students have created a poster presentation as a group work, criticized their own results and evaluated the work of other groups. Student has prepared a laboratory report combining all the results gathered during the course.
Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes
Grades 1-2: Student knows the safety demands included in basic laboratory and clean room work, and manages to use test/lab equipment with the group. Satisfactory command in core content of the course. Grades 3-4: Good command in core content and complementary knowledge of the course. Student is able to prepare samples of biodegradable polymers. Student knows the safety demands included in basic laboratory and clean room work. Student understands the principles of polymer degradation by hydrolysis test series and mechanical properties and can perform different characterization methods (like DSC and TGA) to study biodegradable polymers. Student can calculate results, collect them and analyze their meaning. Students have created a poster presentation as a group work, criticized their own results and evaluated the work of other groups. Student has prepared a laboratory report combining all the results gathered during the course. Good or very good marks from all parts of the course. Grade 5: Most of the learning outcomes have been exceeded. Deep understanding of the whole content of the course and the capability to make own conclusions out of the results while planning new test series or continuation for the performed test series. Student can analyze and differentiate the main properties of biodegradable polymers from DSC/TGA curves and mechanical test results. Almost maximum performance in all parts of the course.
