Learning Outcomes

After the course the student understand when differrent joining methods for metals can be used. Knows how the properties of the different joints and understand their application areas. Is able to describe principles of welding metallurgy and how the welding defects can be avoided. Can consider weldability and welding practices of metals as well as brazing/soldering practices. Understand joint formation in mechanical and adhesive bonding. Understand adhesion proporties and the effect of different types of interphases. Can estimate long-term durability of adhesive bonds in different environments. Improved team working and technical report writing skills.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Fusion welding methods and their application areas for different metals. Metallurgy of fusion welding.   Resistance and solid state welding methods: properties and application areas.
2. Soldering and brazing. Novel brazing consumables.  The weldability and welding methods of different materials.
3. Adhesive joining of metals and related aspects. Combination of different joining methods.  Long term durability of adhesive joints and factors influencing on the durability.  The influence of different joining methods on the properties of metals and structures.
