Learning outcomes:

The aim of this course is to strengthen the general researcher skills of the participant by training her to grasp her own particular field of research in a wider and more general context through some central issues in philosophy of science.

General description:

The course consists of alternating sessions of lectures and discussions. The lectures will cover some central themes in philosophy of science, and these will then be further discussed in smaller groups whose members (to the extent that this is possible) come from related scientific fields.

2. Concepts, Propositions, and Arguments
3. Hypotheses, Explanations, and Justification
4. Scientific Realism and Antirealism

Completion: Passing the course requires a tight following of the lectures and an active participation in the group discussions. There will be no final exam as such, but the participants are required to produce a three-page written presentation where one of the central themes of the course is connected with the participant’s own scientific field and research topic.

Background and Course Objective

Arguments are increasingly being advanced for combining qualitative and quantitative methods in empirical research in organisation and management studies. Such research has many advantages, especially as it provides possibilities for reaping multiple benefits of “traditional” approaches based solely on qualitative and quantitative methods. One example of this is how mixed methods research can assist researchers in at least partly overcoming the trade-off between depth and breadth in empirical research. Another key motivation for mixed methods research is that it provides an opportunity for triangulation or combination of dissimilar methods to enhance the validity and applicability of research findings through the reduction of common methods bias.

The objective of this course is to provide a broadly based introduction to mixed methods research and its application to organisation and management studies. We also discuss the methodological challenges facing scholars undertaking such research and debate the philosophical foundations of mixed methods research.

Course contents and teaching

The course takes a relatively applied approach in that it aims at conveying an understanding of how mixed methods research may be used in practice, but also how such research can contribute to theory development and testing. The ambition is to support participants in their choice of methods, whether their research projects are of a predominantly qualitative or quantitative nature, and point towards potential ways of extending “traditional” research approaches within both these genres. Considerable emphasis will be placed on the use of triangulation for addressing the three “classical”, positivist criteria of external, internal and construct validity. We will also discuss the practical and philosophically tuned critiques of triangulation as a validation technique and explore how mixed methods research can be extended beyond the positivist tradition dominating such research such that it straddles traditional paradigmatic division lines. The teaching takes the form of lectures, group exercises and presentations and discussions based on these presentations.

-    Lecture introducing various critiques of mixed methods research and research approaches emerging in response to such critiques such as meta-triangulation and mixed methods approaches underpinned by pragmatist and critical realist positions.
-    Group work aimed at evaluating emerging debates around these approaches and their implications for theory development. Specific attention will be paid to the implications of these debates for the PhD work of the course participants.

Learning outcomes:

This course will give you practical tips and strategies for writing scientific articles in English. Designed as a two-day workshop, the main objective of this course is to learn to identify and produce the most important elements in English academic writing. The first day offers a series of exercises and points to ponder, whereas the second day offers the students an opportunity to apply these tips and strategies in an "Editing Clinic". During the second day, the students will be taught a ten-step editing process that they will apply to texts in class.

General description

This concise two-day course provides practical tools and support for the management of the 4-year doctoral thesis project. The course is directed at doctoral students at the beginning phase of their studies.

The course

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

What do a house renovation, a PhD defence and a space ship launch have in common? They are all projects—temporary endeavors aimed at creating unique outcomes. They should all have a schedule, a budget, a certain level of quality, etc. To animate these projects, somebody needs to manage and lead them. This course in Project Management and Leadership consists of 11 lectures and 6 practical sessions delivered in three days. The course will give a solid grasp of the Project Management discipline and possibilities for its application to projects in the biomedical field. As practice shows, anyone from a PhD student to a practicing Project Manager will benefit.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

On completion of the course, the participants will:

• know what the discipline of Project Management is, its current state and the existing standards,
• learn what does and doesn’t work in a Research environment and why,
• learn how to efficiently organize work towards a goal,
• be able to develop a professional project’s schedule and budget,
• master the tools to generate ideas, make decisions and solve problems,
• learn good practices for communication within a project, influence others and act in a crisis.

INSTRUCTOR BIO
Sergey V. Nesterov holds a medical degree (MD) from the Faculty of Medicine, St. Petersburg State University (Russia) and a PhD degree in Human Physiology from the Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry (Russia); he holds postgraduate certificates in Project Management and Business Administration from the University of Wales (UK) and is a certified Project Management Professional (USA). He also is an Adjunct Professor in Clinical Physiology at the University of Turku (Finland) and a Research Programme Manager at Turku PET Centre (Finland).

Osaamistavoitteet: Kurssin suoritettuaan opiskelija tietää esiintymistaidon keskeiset osa-alueet ja ymmärtää eri akateemisten esiintymistilanteiden erityispiirteitä. Hän osaa soveltaa havainnollistamisen, kohdentamisen, perustelemisen ja puheenvuoron rakentamisen periaatteita opetustilanteisiin sekä konferenssiesitelmiin ja -postereiden esittelyyn, kykenee yksinkertaistamaan ja tiivistämään tutkimustuloksiaan sähköiselle medialle sopivaan muotoon, osaa arvioida omaa ja muiden esiintymistä sekä sen perusteella kehittää omaa esiintymistään.

Yleiskuvaus: Kurssilla perehdytään esiintymistaidon perusteisiin mm. esiintymisjännityksen hallintaan, havainnollistamiseen, kohdentamiseen, perustelemiseen ja puheenvuoron rakenteeseen. Viestintätilanteista käsitellään erityisesti koulutustilanteita. Myös muiden akateemisten puhetilanteiden, kuten konferenssiesitelmä ja mediaesiintyminen, erityispiirteitä käsitellään. Harjoitusosuudessa harjoitellaan konferenssiesitelmän pitämistä ja tutkimustuloksista medialle kertomista sekä saadaan niistä henkilökohtaista palautetta ja kehittämisehdotuksia.

Kohderyhmä: Kurssi on suunnattu Tampereen yliopiston tieteenalayksiköiden eri alojen tohtoriopiskelijoille. Osallistuminen ei edellytä erityisiä taustaopintoja.

Yleiskuvaus: Kurssilla tutustutaan tutkimuksenteon eettisiin haasteisiin ja eettisiin periaatteisiin. Kurssilla pohditaan tutkimuksen tekemiseen, tieteen etiikkaan ja tutkijan arvovalintoihin liittyviä eettisiä kysymyksiä käytännön esimerkkien avulla. Kurssi tarjoaa tilaisuuden keskustella tutkimuseettisistä kysymyksistä, joita opiskelija on jo mahdollisesti kohdannut tutkimusta tehdessään.

2.     Tutkimuksen aihevalintaan, rahoitukseen ja tutkimuksen tekoon liittyvät eettiset näkökannat

Kurssin suorittaminen edellyttää:

Osaamistavoitteet        

Kurssin tavoitteena on systemaattisen tiedonhallinnan prosessien tunteminen omassa tutkimustyössä Tampereen yliopistossa.

Kurssin suoritettuaan opiskelija:

• osaa soveltaa tiedonhallinnan taitoja tutkimustyössä ottaen huomioon erityisesti lähdemateriaalin ja valitsemansa julkaisukanavan laadun, ajantasaisuuden, vaikuttavuuden ja kansainvälisyyden.
• tuntee väitöskirjan julkaisemiseen ja tutkimusaineiston säilyttämiseen, jakamiseen ja käyttöön liittyvät keskeiset asiat.

Yleiskuvaus

Jatkotutkinto-opiskelu edellyttää hyviä tieteellisen tiedon hankinta‐ ja hallintataitoja. Akateemisessa tutkimuksessa ja työelämässä hyvät tiedonhankinnan taidot tehostavat ja nopeuttavat työskentelyä, mutta parantavat myös työn tulosten laatua. Julkiset tutkimusrahoittajat edellyttävät nykyisin yhä yleisemmin tutkimustulosten avointa julkaisemista ja myös tutkimusdatan jatkokäytön mahdollistamista.

Kurssi tehostaa jatko-opiskelijan/tutkijan työskentelyä tarjoamalla ajantasaisia välineitä oman tutkimusprosessin eri vaiheissa tarvittavaan tiedonhallintaan. Mitä on otettava huomioon valittaessa julkaisukanavaa tutkimuksen tuloksille? Miten tutkimuksen vaikuttavuutta voidaan mitata julkaisujen avulla? Mitä ovat Impact Factor ja H-indeksi? Mikä on ORCID? – muun muassa näihin kysymyksiin saa kurssilla vastauksen.

Kurssilla opitaan hyödyntämään Tampereen yliopiston tietoympäristöä tehokkaasti tutkimustyön tukena. Opitaan hakemaan tietoa systemaattisesti tietokannoista ja siirtämään löydettyjä viitteitä talteen omaan viitteidenhallintaohjelmaan. Kurssi painottuu jatko‐opiskelun alkuvaiheeseen, mutta sen antamat valmiudet tukevat koko tutkimusprosessia, joten ne ovat myös tutkijan uralle jo edenneiden hyödynnettävissä.

Kuinka suuri osa tutkimusjulkaisuista yleensä löytyy käytettävissä olevista tietolähteistä? Miten yliopiston tutkimusjulkaisut näkyvät tutkijalle tärkeissä tietojärjestelmissä, esimerkiksi e-lehtipalveluissa ja Google Scholarissa, ja mihin se perustuu? Julkaisujen vaikuttavuuden arviointi viittausindeksien ja muiden tunnuslukujen avulla ja niiden mahdollisuudet ja rajoitukset (H-indeksi, Impact Factor, Web of Science ja Scopus, Julkaisufoorumi, Publish or Perish). Tutkijan identifiointi verkkopalveluissa (esim. ResearcherID, ORCID).

Mitä tietolähteitä on tutkijoiden käytettävissä ja miten niitä voi käyttää osana omaa tutkimusta? Käsitellään keskeiset verkkoympäristöt, niiden sisältö ja käytettävyys tutkimuksen kannalta. Opetuskerralla syvennytään kaikille tutkijoille keskeisten tietolähteiden tuntemukseen, täsmennetään omaan tutkimusaiheeseen liittyvät tiedontarpeet ja opitaan niiden käsitteellinen analysointi apuvälineitä hyödyntäen: hakutavat, suunnitelmallinen tiedonhakuprosessi ja hakustrategiat.

Kehittämistehtävä

Osallistujat tekevät kehittämistehtävänä suunnitelman siitä, miten he aikovat käytännössä hyödyntää kurssilla oppimaansa. Kehittämistehtävässä käsitellään kaikkien kurssin moduulien sisältöjä.

Käytännössä osallistujat mm. etsivät kolme oman alansa potentiaalista julkaisukanavaa (esim. tieteellinen lehti), johon voisivat tarjota artikkeliaan tai muuta julkaisuaan.  Valinta perustellaan. Julkaisukanavan valinnassa kiinnitetään huomiota julkaisukanavan vaikuttavuuteen (esim. Impact Factor, JUFO-taso) ja Open Access -menettelyihin (SHERPARoMEO).

Kehittämistehtävässä arvioidaan, miten tiedonhallinta kytkeytyy osallistujan omaan tutkimustyöhön ja millä tavalla tiedonhallinta näkyy omassa tutkimussuunnitelmassa: miten tietoa hankitaan, mitä tietolähteitä käytetään, mitä menetelmiä tiedon järjestämiseen hyödynnetään ja miten tutkimustulokset julkaistaan ja miten julkaisut säilytetään.  Kehittämistehtävässä osallistuja kuvaa, miten hän on perehtynyt oman alansa saatavilla oleviin empiirisiin tutkimusaineistoihin (data-aineistoihin), aikooko mahdollisesti hyödyntää niitä tutkimuksessaan tai tallentaa omaa empiiristä aineistoaan johonkin keskitettyyn palveluun muun tiedeyhteisön jatkokäytettäväksi.  Kehittämistehtävän laajuus on noin 2-3 liuskaa tekstiä.

IASR Lectures are studia generalia lectures in the study of society given bimonthly by the fellows of the Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR) and on ad hocbasis by distinguished guests of the IASR. Although the lecture topics vary, they always touch the study of society in one way or another.

Narrativity and Fictionality in contemporary society and culture - tools to navigate with precision

Learning outcomes: The participant of the course gains a concise understanding of the methodological skills involved in narrative analysis. She understands her own particular field of research and the questions it raises about the uses of stories about actual states of affairs as well as of invented stories. To achieve this end, both classic and novel approaches to narrative and fictionality will be introduced and applied to contemporary cases from literature and culture, including political campaigns, social media, research interviews etc. The emphasis will be on theoretical and conceptual precision on one hand and on a hands-on analysis of texts of all kinds on the other.

General description: The widely-heralded “narrative turn” toward the importance of storytelling in different disciplines has not yet led to a focus on the pervasiveness and significance of fictionality. Thus the specific uses and affordances of invented stories are surprisingly undertheorized. Stories emphatically presented as invented are regularly and pervasively employed in political rhetoric, as vehicles of cultural memory and ideological negotiation of past and present, in thought experiments, scenario thinking and risk assessments, and in many other areas of the societal, political and cultural field. What is more, fictional techniques (for example those enabling access to the mind of another in a third-person context) are used as communicative resources in many non-fictional texts. The links between narratives and fictionality are investigated in the course, and practical tools provided for analyzing narrativity and fictionality in different narrative environments. The course is theoretical and analytical in nature.

Completion: Passing the course requires writing the pre-reflection paper, a tight following of the lectures and an active participation in both the group discussions and the roundtable discussions. There will be no final exam as such, but the participants are required to produce a three-page written presentation where one of the central themes of the course is connected with the participant’s own scientific field and research topic.

Contents

In order to attain the intended learning outcomes, the participants will take an active role. They will be given guidance and information in the form of mini-lectures. However, students will be asked to  deconstruct articles in their own field, analyze journals in order to gain a better understanding of their expectations and profile,  and act as peer reviewers.

Special attention will be given to address the multidisciplinary concerns of the groups and focus will also be given to gaining a better understanding of the language and structural functions of writing for research. Although academic disciplines are different, many of the same key strategies and components can be used.

The course is intended for post-graduate students who feel  that they need support in writing and reading research in English.

Osaamistavoitteet

Kurssin tavoitteena on antaa osallistujille yleiskäsitys tieteellisten artikkeleiden tehokkaasta kirjoittamisprosessista ja tarjota valmiuksia prosessin hyödyntämiseen omassa julkaisutoiminnassaan.

Kohderyhmä

Kurssi on tarkoitettu oman julkaisemisuransa eri vaiheissa oleville, kaikkien tieteenalayksikköjen tohtoriopiskelijoille. Kurssi on erityisen hyödyllinen aloitteleville tohtoriopiskelijoille.

Sisältö

Kurssi koostuu avoimesta, artikkelin julkaisun perusasiat läpikäyvästä, luennosta (4 h Pekka Belt), ennakkotehtävästä sekä seminaarityöskentelystä, jonka aikana käydään läpi julkaisemiseen liittyviä käytäntöjä, karikkoja ja kehittymisen keinoja (7 h).

Kaikki kurssilaiset osallistuvat sekä luentoon että seminaariin. Luento on avoin myös muille kiinnostuneille. Pelkästä luennosta ei myönnetä opintopisteitä.

Lue opas ”Tips for writing scientific journal articles" (http://herkules.oulu.fi/isbn9789514293801/isbn9789514293801.pdf). Valitse omalta alaltasi kohdelehti, jossa voisit julkaista lähitulevaisuudessa. Analysoi alaltasi 2-3 artikkelia, jotka on julkaistu viimeisen parin vuoden aikana. Analysoi artikkelien rakennetta (ei substanssia) vertaamalla sitä artikkelinkirjoittamisoppaassa esitettyyn rakenteeseen. Pohdi, esitetäänkö vastaavat asiat ja esitetäänkö ne samoissa vai eri paikoissa. Kirjaa nämä tiedot ennakkotehtävään. Ennakkotehtävään kirjataan myös osallistujan nimi, oppiala ja tutkimusaihe, julkaisemiseen liittyviä ongelmakohtia sekä teemat, joiden käsittelyä erityisesti toivotaan kurssisisältöön. Ennakkotehtävät lähetetään kurssin Moodle-alueelle viimeistään viikkoa ennen kurssin alkamista (viim. 9.11.2015).

Osallistujat valmistelevat seminaariryhmässä esitettäväksi lyhyen (3-4 diaa) PowerPoint-esityksen ennakkotehtävän rakenneanalyysissä esiin tulleista havainnoistaan. PP-esitystä ei lähetetä Moodleen.

• can apply information management skills in research work by taking into account especially the quality, currentness, impact and internationality of selected information sources and publishing channels

• knows essential practices in the use, delivery and preservation of research data

General description

A doctoral student needs good scientific information seeking and management skills. These skills make academic research and work more efficient and also improve the quality of scientific output. Public research funders often presume open publishing of research results and a possibility to reuse the research data.

This course makes a doctoral student’s working more effective by offering up-to-date tools for the management of information in all phases of the research process. It offers an answer for example to these questions:

• What do I have to take into account when selecting a publishing channel for my research results?
• How can the research impact be measured via publications?
• What are Impact Factor and H-index?
• What is ORCID?

During the course, the participants learn to make the most of the University’s information environment for the support of their research work. They learn to make systematic information searches using several databases and to export references to a reference management software. They also get familiarized with the good scientific practice in scientific writing at the University of Tampere.

The focus of the course is at the beginning of doctoral studies but the skills it gives will support the whole research process and also benefit those who are at more advanced stage in their research career.

What proportion of research publications are available via our information sources? How Tampere are university research publications represented in the most important information resources, for example e-journal collections and Google Scholar, and what is the reason for this? Evaluation of the impact of publications with citation indexes and other measuring methods and their possibilities and limitations (H-index, impact factor, Web of Science, Scopus, Finnish Publication forum JUFO, Publish or Perish). Identification of a researcher (ResearcherID, ORCID).

What information sources are available for researchers and how can they be used as a part of researcher’s work? Most important scientific information resources, their coverage and usability for research. In this module we will focus on those information sources that are essential for all researchers. We will also specify participants’ information needs and learn how to plan a search strategy.

What scientific writing tools does the library offer to researchers? Why should I use a reference management system? How to export references from different databases to RefWorks reference management system? How to create a bibliography automatically? How to share references with colleagues or create storage of references for the research group? Where do I find guidance to reference practices and standards? How can I export my references from one system to another (for example between EndNote, RefWorks and Mendeley)?

Module 5. Publishing services, Open Access –publishing and research data preservation (2 h), on Tuesday 3.11. at 14-16 (Paavo Koli Hall, Pinni A) (date and Hall changed)

Publishing a dissertation. What options are there? Publishing in the Acta series of the university. Layout and useful tools for editing a dissertation. Practicalities (costs, permissions, publicising research results).

Development task

Coursework is an essay of 2-3 pages. Participant makes a plan of how to take advantage of the course in his/her research work. Please use information from all modules where you have taken part. Tasks to be included in the coursework:

• Find 3 potential publishing channels (for example scientific journals) where you could consider submitting your article (or other publication). Tell why you have selected these! Look also at the scientific impact of selected channels (IF, JUFO) and their open access policy (SherpaRomeo).
• Tell how you will include information seeking and management process in your research: how you gather information, which information sources you use, how you organize references and how you plan to publish and preserve publications.
• Describe whether you are familiar with any archived digital research data, and whether you are going to use it. Describe also if you are planning to store your own research data for the possible future use of the scientific community.

Lukuvuonna 2015-2016 järjestetään yksi suuremmalle joukolle suunnattu suomenkielinen Yliopistopedagogiikan perusteet (10 op) koulutus 2.-3. periodilla. Kyse on Tampereen yliopiston tieteenalayksiköiden henkilöstölle sekä yliopistouralle suuntaaville tohtoriopiskelijoille suunnatusta yhteisestä toteutuksesta.

Koulutukseen valitaan 50 osallistujaa hakemusten perusteella, noin 30 henkilökunnasta ja noin 20 tutkijakoulusta.  Valittavalla tulee olla työsuhde tai jatko-opiskeluoikeus Tampereen yliopistoon. Etusijalla koulutukseen ovat sellaiset hakijat,  jotka toimivat opetus- tai ohjaustehtävissä, tai joilla on sovittuna opetustehtäviä yliopistossa lukuvuodelle 2015-2016,  jotka ovat esimiehensä tai väitöskirjan ohjaajan kanssa sopineet koulutukseen osallistumisesta ja joilla ei ole aiempaa pedagogista koulutusta. Valinnassa huomioidaan eri yksiköistä tulevien tasapuolinen jakautuminen sekä hakijan motivaatio ja sitoutuminen opiskeluprosessiin.

Osaamistavoitteet:

Kurssin tavoitteena on vahvistaa yleisiä tutkijataitoja ja erityisesti syventää opiskelijan eettistä tietoisuutta tutkimuksen tekoon liittyvistä eettisistä ulottuvuuksista sekä tieteeseen liittyvistä arvovalinnoista. Samalla kurssin tavoitteena on selventää tutkijan ammatti-identiteettiä ja tutkijan vastuullista roolia yliopistossa sekä yhteiskunnassa

Kohderyhmä: Kurssi on suunnattu Tampereen yliopiston tieteenalayksiköiden eri alojen tohtoriopiskelijoille. Lisäksi kuhunkin ryhmään on varattu kiintiön Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston tohtoriopiskelijoille. Osallistuminen ei edellytä erityisiä taustaopintoja.

Yleiskuvaus: Kurssilla tutustutaan tutkimuksenteon eettisiin haasteisiin ja eettisiin periaatteisiin. Kurssilla pohditaan tutkimuksen tekemiseen, tieteen etiikkaan ja tutkijan arvovalintoihin liittyviä eettisiä kysymyksiä käytännön esimerkkien avulla. Kurssi tarjoaa tilaisuuden keskustella tutkimuseettisistä kysymyksistä, joita opiskelija on jo mahdollisesti kohdannut tutkimusta tehdessään.

Kurssin suorittaminen edellyttää:

General description: This course will give you practical tips and strategies for writing scientific articles in English. Designed as a two-day workshop, the main objective of this course is to learn to identify and produce the most important elements in English academic writing.

The first day offers a series of exercises and points to ponder, whereas the second day offers the students an opportunity to apply these tips and strategies in an "Editing Clinic". During the second day, the students will be taught a ten-step editing process that they will apply to texts in class.

Yleiskuvaus

Opintojakso on tarkoitettu alkuvaiheen jatko-opiskelijalle. Kurssin aikana parannetaan osallistujan alustavaa tutkimussuunnitelmaa, ja edistymistä arvioidaan lopussa. Alussa kuvataan tutkimustulosten merkittävyyttä ja sen selvittämistä kirjallisuuskatsauksella etukäteen. Lisäksi esitetään tutkimustehtävien luokitus, joka auttaa lähestymistavan valinnassa. Kurssin aikana keskustellaan osanottajien ideoista, tutkimusongelmista ja tutkimussuunnitelmista sekä ideoidaan niitä eteenpäin. Opettaja voi jakaa sähköisesti alkuperäisiä metodiartikkeleita ja niistä laadittuja tiivistelmiä tarpeen mukaan n. 700 artikkelin tietokannastaan.

Opetusmuodot
Kurssi aloitetaan tutkimustyön perusteiden opetuksella keskustelevaa luontoa käyttäen. Kurssille hyväksytyt toimittavat oman tutkimussuunnitelmansa opettajalle. Muut päivät viedään läpi osanottajien päivitettyjä tutkimussuunnitelmia seminaarimaisesti käsitellen ja lopuksi yhteen vetäen. Kunkin osanottajan tulee lukea mahdollisimman monta muiden osanottajien tutkimussuunnitelmaa ja antaa niistä rakentavaa palautetta seminaaripäivinä.

Osaamistavoitteet: Kurssin suoritettuaan opiskelija tietää esiintymistaidon keskeiset osa-alueet ja ymmärtää eri akateemisten esiintymistilanteiden erityispiirteitä. Hän osaa soveltaa havainnollistamisen, kohdentamisen, perustelemisen ja puheenvuoron rakentamisen periaatteita konferenssiesitelmään, kykenee yksinkertaistamaan ja tiivistämään tutkimustuloksiaan sähköiselle medialle sopivaan muotoon, osaa arvioida omaa ja muiden esiintymistä sekä sen perusteella kehittää omaa esiintymistään. Lisäksi hän tietään ryhmäviestinnän keskeiset periaatteet ja tuntee neuvottelutaidon alkeet.

Yleiskuvaus Kurssilla perehdytään esiintymistaidon perusteisiin mm. esiintymisjännityksen hallintaan, havainnollistamiseen, kohdentamiseen, perustelemiseen ja puheenvuoron rakenteeseen. Esiintymistilanteista käsitellään erityisesti konferenssiesitelmää. Myös muiden akateemisten puhetilanteiden, kuten posterin esittely, luennointi ja mediaesiintyminen, erityispiirteitä käsitellään. Harjoitusosuudessa harjoitellaan konferenssiesitelmän pitämistä ja tutkimustuloksista medialle kertomista sekä saadaan niistä henkilökohtaista palautetta ja kehittämisehdotuksia.

Kesto: kontaktiopetusta 22h, joista 10h luentoa ja 12h harjoituksia.

Sisältö: Opintojakson aihealueet ovat validiteetti, reliabiliteetti ja vaihtoehtoiset arviointikriteerit kvantitatiivisessa, kvalitatiivisessa ja mixed methods -tutkimuksessa. Kurssi koostuu asiantuntijaluennoista sekä osallistujien käynnissä olevien tutkimusten käsittelystä seminaaritapaamisissa sekä harjoitustyöstä (oman tutkimuksen arviointi).

Osaamistavoitteet

Opiskelija hahmottaa väitöskirjatyön prosessina, jossa tutkimuskysymys, aineisto ja menetelmä vuorovaikuttavat, oivaltaa käsitteiden ja teorian merkityksen tutkimukselle, sekä tunnistaa analyysin ja teorian keskinäisen vuoropuhelun tekemällä pienimuotoisen kvalitatiivisen demonstraation. 

Yleiskuvaus:

Opintojakso motivoi ja tukee aloittelevaa tohtoriopiskelijaa käynnistämään väitöskirjaprosessin ja tarjoaa välineitä työn etenemisen käytännölliseen ja käsitteelliseen hallintaan. Kokeneemmalle tohtoriopiskelijalle kurssi tarjoaa mahdollisuuden jakaa kokemuksia, avata keskeisiä kysymyksiä ja käsitteitä sekä pohtia ja hahmottaa oman työn etenemistä. Työskentelyn pohjana on ryhmäprosessi, jossa kartoitetaan osallistujien kokemia konkreettisia haasteita. Näiden pohjalta kuullaan luentoja ja tehdään ryhmätyötä.

IASR Lectures are studia generalia lectures in the study of society given bimonthly by the fellows of the Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR) and on ad hocbasis by distinguished guests of the IASR. Although the lecture topics vary, they always touch the study of society in one way or another.

Doctoral students can get 2 ECTS for attending a minimum of six IASR Lectures, altogether 6 ECTS at the maximum. These 2 ECTS for attending 6 lectures can be earned during two successive semesters.

The course focuses on the basic and general features of scientific research, methodology, and argumentation, as applicable to any field of study. Some central themes in the philosophy of science will also be discussed, in an introductory manner.

The course is intended to all new international Master’s degree students, but it will serve also international Doctoral students.

Study methods: Students are required to send a pre-assignment to Moodle. Pre-assignment consists of a draft of student’s abstract of a research proposal in English. The draft can be written especially for this purpose or students can use their previous abstracts.

Mode of assessment: Active participation is required. After the workshop, students are required to re-write and revise the abstract and send it to Moodle again.

The visibility and accessibility of research expertise and researcher profiles is key to building your personal and professional brand. Researchers' digital profiles are an increasingly important element in how research circulates and how researchers become known and recruited. This practical one-day workshop will assist doctoral candidates in producing clear and credible profiles for sites such as Academia.edu.

Study Methods: During the course, students get to know different digital environments relevant and useful to researchers. They try at least couple of them in order to find the best fitting for their purposes. The course consists of lecture + hands-on exercises. The latter takes place in a computer classroom. Students should come prepared with an electronic copy of their CV and a digital portrait photo suitable for uploading.

Mode of assessment: Active participation in lecture and exercises, hands-on exercises on developing your own academic profile.

Course information

Learning outcomes: This course provides doctoral students with understanding over writing scientific journal articles. The lecture will motivate students to start writing sooner. After the lecture the student will understand what is required from a scientific article and what the related publishing processes entail. The student will know how to approach and write a scientific journal article effectively.

The lecture aims at providing tips to researchers in all fields. Especially starting researchers have experienced the lecture and workshop as very beneficial. Also researchers that have written multiple articles have given positive feedback.

Pre-meeting assignment:

•             Read the guidebook "Tips for writing scientific journal articles" (http://herkules.oulu.fi/isbn9789514293801/isbn9789514293801.pdf). Choose a potential target journal where you wish to publish in the future. Analyse the structure, not substance, of 2-3 articles recently published in this journal by comparing them against the structure presented in the guidebook. Write a report in text format (e.g. MSWord) of your observations, pay attention to any deviations in structure. 

•             Prepare a short presentation of your observations, for instance, using 3-4 PowerPoint slides. This presentation will be publicly shown.
•             In the report, include your reflections about the issues you consider as bottlenecks in your scientific writing. These will be discussed in the workshop anonymously.
•             In the report, include the topics you wish to be discussed during the workshop
•             Please, remember to include your name, academic field, and your research topic

Osaamistavoitteet:

Tämän kaksipäiväisen kurssin tavoitteena on vahvistaa yleisiä tutkijataitoja siten, että osallistuja oppii monipuolisemmin ja laajemmin hahmottamaan omaa tutkimusalaansa tieteenfilosofisesti keskeisten kysymysten kautta.

Kohderyhmä: Kurssi on suunnattu Tampereen yliopiston tieteenalayksiköiden eri alojen jatko-opiskelijoille. Osallistuminen ei edellytä erityisiä taustaopintoja.

Yleiskuvaus: Kurssi koostuu vuorottelevista luento- ja keskusteluosuuksista. Luennoilla nostetaan esiin tieteenfilosofisesti keskeisiä kysymyksiä ja teemoja, joiden käsittelyä jatketaan mahdollisuuksien mukaan tieteenalakohtaisiksi jaetuissa keskusteluryhmissä.

Kurssin suoritus: Kurssin suorittaminen edellyttää luentojen tiivistä seuraamista ja aktiivista osallistumista keskusteluun. Varsinaista loppukuulustelua ei järjestetä, mutta osallistujat kirjoittavat lopuksi kolmen sivun kirjallisen esityksen, jossa jokin kurssin keskeisistä teemoista kytketään omaan tieteenalaan ja tutkimusaiheeseen.

Kurssille otetaan enintään 50 opiskelijaa. Valintatapa on arvonta. Opiskelijan on itse tarkistettava valintatieto NettiOpsusta ilmoittautumisajan päätyttyä.

Oletko hukassa aineistosi kanssa? Tuntuuko analyysin tekeminen vaikealta? Kaipaatko tukea analyysisi toteuttamiseen? Kurssin aikana opit, kuinka selviytyä laadullisen aineiston analysoinnista ja opit hallitsemaan aineistoasi. Kurssilla tutustutaan laadullisen aineiston analyysitapoihin ja pohditaan erilaisia analyysiin liittyviä kysymyksiä. Kurssi tarjoaa mahdollisuuden keskustella laadullisen aineiston analyysiin liittyvistä kysymyksistä, joita opiskelija on jo mahdollisesti kohdannut tutkimusta tehdessään. Kurssi toteutetaan käytännönläheisesti ja opiskelijoiden omia tutkimuksia ja aineistoja hyödyntäen.

Kurssin aikana käydään läpi muun muassa seuraavia teemoja:

– laadullisen tekstiaineiston perinteiset analysointitavat (sisällönanalyysi, teemoittelu, tyypittely, kvantifiointi)

– laadullisen aineiston analyysiprosessi

– analyysin sudenkuopat

– analyysin ja tutkimuksen toteutuksen raportointi

This course invites students in various stages of their doctoral thesis to think through, write and process the ethical questions and themes in their own ongoing research projects. It provides a compact knowledge package on ethical issues concerning the research design, data collection/field work and writing-up phases. The course consists of lectures, discussion & student presentations in class and assignments.

Learning outcomes: After the course, students will

- be better equipped to think about and deal with ethical issues at different phases of their research projects
- have skills to discuss and identify issues concerning the ethics both in relation to research participant and the academic community (treatment of participants, informed consent, data lifespan, publication and ethical reporting)
- have knowledge on the key guidelines concerning ethical conduct and know where to go for further information
- have practical tools and means for the writing-up of ethical question in the doctoral thesis.
- have access to an information package on ethics
- know the basic functions of Turnitin plagiarism checker programme

Completion mode: Those accepted to the course are required to send in a pre-assignment (max one page A 4) through Moodle. Active participation is required. Every student will give a 15-20 minutes presentation in the workshop. Every student will write an 6-7 pages essay after the course.

THE PRE-ASSIGNMENT: Please include the following in short:
1)    Your name & discipline
2)    Your Research topic
3)    Potential ethical issues you have encountered or anticipated to encounter as part of your doctoral research and solutions you may already have in mind
4)    Any issues relating to research ethics you wish to be discussed during the course
5)    Please indicate if you are not willing to present some key ethical themes concerning your own doctoral work, otherwise it is presumed that you could present briefly during the course the ethical questions that you are facing during your research. There is a short (max. 3 page) writing task for those who don’t deliver a brief oral presentation during the course.

•    are more aware of discipline-specific academic conventions, i.e. the academic conventions of their field
•    are able to read and assess the relevancy of articles in a faster and more efficient manner
•    are aware of their responsibilities and role as peer reviewers
•    are able to understand the expectations of their target audience,  in order to tailor their  own research articles for specific contexts
•    are aware of the different functions of language in academic writing in English: i.e.
o    how to interpret writer’s attitude, level of commitment
o     the  use of tense, voice, register
o    how to create cohesion

Contents

In order to attain the intended learning outcomes, the participants will take an active role. They will be given guidance and information in the form of mini-lectures. However, students will be asked to  deconstruct articles in their own field, analyze journals in order to gain a better understanding of their expectations and profile,  and act as peer reviewers.

Special attention will be given to address the multidisciplinary concerns of the groups and focus will also be given to gaining a better understanding of the language and structural functions of writing for research. Although academic disciplines are different, many of the same key strategies and components can be used.

The course is intended for post-graduate students who feel  that they need support in writing and reading research in English.

4. To deliver a talk in a relaxed manner using effective visual aids, but without reading
5. To analyze one's own presentation and (in groups) others' presentations in a supportive, affirmative manner, including attention to body language and visual aids.
