Last chance: Apply now to the UArctic’s Circumpolar Studies online spring courses! Application deadline is 22 November 2023
The spring semester 2024 of the Circumpolar Studies programme will start in January and end in April 2024. Six online courses are offered in the upcoming spring and these courses will be organised by several North American universities. Each course is worth 6 ECTS credits and is taught in English. Courses are organised on a Moodle-like teaching platform and can include participants from different countries beside North American students. More courses will be offered later in autumn 2024 and a new call for these courses will be published in the intranet. Please note that only three courses below have no prerequisites.
Available online courses in spring 2024 (Jan-Apr)
- CS 100 - Introduction to the Circumpolar World, 6 ECTS (Yukon University & University of Northern British Columbia)
- CS 312* – Land and Environment of the Circumpolar World II, 6 ECTS (Trent University)
- CS 322* – Peoples and Cultures of the Circumpolar World II, 6 ECTS (Trent University)
- CS 332* – Contemporary Issues of the Circumpolar World II, 6 ECTS (Trent University)
- CS 400 - Arctic Environmental Security, 6 ECTS (Trent University)
- CAST 3241H - Histories of the Canadian North, 6 ECTS (University of Alaska)
There are no prerequisites only for the introduction course CS 100 and special courses CS 400 and CAST 3241H, these are open for all new applicants.
* The CS 100 is the prerequisite course for CS 312, CS 322 and CS 332. Students who have not either completed CS 100 or are not completing right now CS 100 in the autumn semester (before January 2024), cannot register in these courses.
Eligibility, credit transfer and an academic transcript
Courses are open for all degree and spring semester 2024 exchange students (all levels) of Tampere University. Credits will be recorded at the offering institution and may be transferred to Tampere University’s academic transcript after completion of the course. The original academic transcript will be issued by the host university and will be sent to Tampere University in 6-12 weeks after the end of the course. Studies completed in the Circumpolar Studies programme may be added to your degree at Tampere University, but remember to discuss the credit transfer with your faculty or degree programme first. Since it takes a long time to get the transcript and complete the recognition process, please do not count on these courses for the graduation purposes.
Exchange students will receive a separate North American transcript of records after completing the course, but please note that it might take several weeks. Only exchange students that will study at Tampere University in the spring semester 2024 are eligible to apply.
The internalisation module and extra points for north2north exchange studies in 2024-25
Completing online courses in the Circumpolar Studies programme gives you a chance to include credits to the internationalisation module of your degree and yield extra points when applying for a north2north student exchange (degree students only) studies in the academic year 2024-25. How to apply to the Circumpolar Studies courses
Please submit your signed (by hand or digitally) and scanned registration form before the deadline as a PDF file to the north2north programme coordinator Igor Tanskanen by 22 November 2023. The registration form can be found below, attached. Unsigned or late registration forms will not be accepted. Please use your TUNI email address and fill in the form on your computer as handwriting can be difficult to read.
