From August 2024 onwards, the courses that can be attended free of charge at Tampere University’s Open University will include foundation courses that pave the way for university admission as well as courses supporting studies and introductory courses for secondary school students.
Tampere University’s Open University is set to revise its pricing policy in August 2024 in response to the Finnish Government’s recent decision to increase the cap on open university tuition fees.

The tuition fees charged by Tampere University’s Open University will change at the beginning of August 2024, when the Open University introduces three pricing categories.

The first category includes studies that are free of charge. These include foundation courses that prepare candidates for admission to university and can lead to direct entry into a degree programme as well as courses supporting studies and introductory courses.

The second category includes basic and intermediate studies as well as other studies. The tuition fee charged for these studies will be €20 per ECTS credit from August onwards.

The third category includes advanced studies, which will be priced at €30 per ECTS credit.

The Open University’s tuition fees will also apply to other fee-based, non-degree studies that are completed at Tampere University.

Changes in pricing are a result of the current Government Programme and the decision made by the Finnish Government

The changes in the Open University’s pricing policy are due to the decision made by the Finnish Government in the spring of 2024 to increase the maximum fee for open university education from €15 to €45 per ECTS credit. The changes in pricing will also affect the fees charged for extending degree completion time and re-enrolment fees, which are set to rise from €35 to €50, effective from 1 January 2025.

The Government’s decision allows universities and universities of applied sciences to charge higher tuition fees that better reflect the costs of providing education. Despite these changes, higher education institutions will have the option to set their open university tuition fees below the established price ceiling of €45 per ECTS credit or even waive them entirely.
