Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC) arranges a seminar to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Articles on the faculty will be published on the celebration website toward the end of the year.

You are warmly welcome to the 75th anniversary celebration seminar on Friday 22 November 2024!

The day begins with the farewell lectures of three professors at 9.15. Farewell lectures will be given by Professor of Social Work Tarja Pösö, Professor of History Christian Krötzl and Professor of Sociology Risto Heiskala

The anniversary seminar is arranged at the main auditorium of Päätalo on the city centre campus (address: Kalevantie 4) at 12.15-16.00 (Kalevantie 4). The programme consists of celebration lectures, music and remembrances. One of the lectures, Uncomfortable Entanglements: Neuroscience and History, is given in English by University Researcher Rob Boddice.

Seventy-five years ago, the Faculty of Social Sciences was established at the predecessor of Tampere University, the School of Social Sciences (YKK). It was the first and, for many years, the only faculty when YKK relocated to Tampere from Helsinki in 1960. In Tampere, YKK started with 10 professorships and one faculty. The Faculty of Social Sciences was followed by the Faculty of Humanities (1964) and Faculty of Economics and Administration a year later. In Tampere, the higher education institution was renamed the University of Tampere in 1966.

Keep tabs on the anniversary year by reading news on the fields of science and on social media using #SOC75. The faculty’s people and SOC themes are presented on the celebration website for the rest of the year.
