The value of the award is €5,000 for a group or €2,000 for an individual. The prize is jointly funded by the University of Tampere Foundation and the Industrial Research Fund at Tampere University of Technology. The recipient of the prize will be selected by the Open Science Steering Group by 31 March 2025.
Suggest a recipient for the prize
Justified proposals for the recipient of the Open Science prize should be submitted using a special form by 31 January 2025. You may use the same form to propose several recipients.
In 2024, the theme is the promotion of responsible openness of research data.
Present a deed, operating model or equivalent that is related to the openness of research data. Please also describe how it has promoted the good management of research data at our Universities Community and/or more widely. Please clearly name the person(s) to whom the prize should be awarded (e.g. is it awarded to a person or a group?).
The specific theme for promoting responsible openness varies annually and includes topics such as responsible openness in publishing, research data management, learning, and organisational culture. The theme for the prize to be awarded in 2026 is open learning and the promotion of best practices as part of teaching and/or learning materials.
Do you have a project or action in mind that promotes the responsible openness of research data and deserves recognition? Or a research project that serves as a good example for others in terms of data management practices? Or a project that has produced research data that has significant potential for further use and reuse? Or do you know of a project that has utilised existing data collected in a previous context in an exemplary way?
Prize encourages open science practices
Open science is an important part of Tampere University’s operations. With the Open Science prize, the University thanks community members for their successes, encourages them to invest in promoting the responsible openness of science, and highlights successful open science practices. The award proposals can later be utilised, for example, in communicating about good practices in open science.
The aim of open science is to promote the high quality and societal impact of science and research by enabling co-creation and making scientific results openly available to everyone.
The concept of open science encompasses the openness of the research culture, publishing, research data, and other research outputs, as well as open education. Furthermore, open science is used for increasing scientific cooperation and the shared use of research outputs, and for opening research by involving partners from outside the academic community.
