Do you dream of experiencing Canadian culture, participating in research in Canada, and gaining valuable work experience at a Canadian university? Would you like to improve your English skills in an authentic environment? Are you looking for new perspectives and want to broaden your horizons beyond Finland? This fantastic opportunity is available for students in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, computer science, and telecommunications. You can apply for a student exchange in North America during the autumn application period or for a research internship (in English) at the universities of Montreal and Toronto.

The main application period for student exchanges to North America for the 2025-26 academic year will be held 1 - 15 November, 2024. At the same time, a unique opportunity opens up for master’s and doctoral level students to apply for a research internship (in English) at two Canadian universities.

Why go to Canada?

Canada offers a unique multicultural environment where you can enjoy top-tier universities, a hockey-loving nation, and stunning natural landscapes. The economies and research fields of Finland and Canada often overlap due to geographical reasons, so studying in Canada can also open doors to international career opportunities.

Research internships available in Montreal and Toronto

English-language research internships are available at École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal (learn more: Research Internship) and York University in Toronto (learn more: International Visiting Research Trainee). The recommended minimum duration is 3 months. The main application period for research internships is during the autumn application period, and selected students are responsible for finding a research internship position and supervisor, agreeing on the internship period, and covering travel, health insurance, and living expenses in Canada. Note that you cannot take courses at the host university during the research internship. However, you are eligible to apply for local student housing and will receive a student card with all its benefits.

ÉTS Montreal

ÉTS Montreal ranks second among engineering universities in Canada and graduates about 25% of engineers in the province of Quebec. ÉTS focuses heavily on research internships and experimentation, so you will be exposed to real-world problems faced by companies. ÉTS has about thirty scientific (French-speaking) clubs working on robots, drones, racing cars, solar vehicles, amphibious and off-road vehicles, submarines, etc. Check out potential research internship positions on the Research Institutes, Chairs, and Units page.

York University

York University is Canada’s third-largest public research university. York has a close collaboration with the Canadian space programme, and the Lassonde School of Engineering has designed several space research instruments and applications used by NASA. The university’s strengths include space research, history and refugee studies, health, environment, climate change, sustainable development, and digital media. Check out potential research internship placements on the Organized Research Units and York’s Faculties pages.

Where else can I apply during the autumn application round?

In addition to the aforementioned research internships, you can also apply for student exchanges to non-European destinations with certain restrictions (if you are a master’s or doctoral student). If you are a doctoral student, also check the page Mobility and internationalisation in doctoral studies.
