New students admitted to Tampere University

Judging by the number of first-choice applicants, the programmes leading to a licentiate degree in medicine, a degree in economics and business administration and a degree in psychology were once again the most popular fields of study at Tampere University. In addition, the programmes leading to a teaching degree, an administrative sciences degree and a social sciences degree received a large number of applications.  

University place for 3,400 new students

Approximately 3400 new students will enrol on the Finnish-language degree programmes at Tampere University in the autumn of 2021. In addition, more than 800 applicants who sought admission to degree programme offered through the medium of English were accepted earlier in the spring.

Entrance examinations took place at Tampere University between 6 April and 11 June 2021. Strict safety measures were put in place to ensure the health and safety of exam takers on the campuses.

“Both exam takers and the members of the university community who were involved in organising entrance exams closely adhered to the instructions and thereby made it possible to run the events safely,” says Head of Student Services Kaisa Keskitalo.

The popularity of alternative routes for admission increased

Besides the standard admission routes, students can gain admission to Tampere University through the performance-based admission route and the Open University routes. In the autumn of 2021, Tampere University will welcome 213 new students who sought admission through the performance-based or the Open University routes. The number of applicants admitted through the alternative routes increased slightly from last year.

“For applicants who were not offered a place this year, Open University studies are an excellent option if you want to increase your knowledge and skills, or if you are considering applying at a later date for a place on a degree programme.  Keskitalo says.

New students start their studies on the campuses

As a rule, the welcome weeks for new students will be organised on the campuses in late August, but necessary safety measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 will be observed. Tutor groups will also be able to meet in person on the campuses.

A hybrid teaching model will be in place when the autumn semester begins, meaning that lectures and events that bring together more than 50 people will be organised in a virtual format. Smaller classes and group work activities may take place face-to-face on the campuses, but necessary safety measures must be observed. Tampere University is monitoring the recommendations issued by the public health authorities and will update the guidelines if necessary. 

All newly admitted students are advised to read the new student checklist and programme-specific instructions, which are available on the University’s website, well in advance before the academic semester begins. The results of student admission under the joint national application scheme are available in the My Studyinfo service. Newly admitted students must accept their offer of admission no later than 16 July 2021 at 15.00.

All applicants who sought admission to higher education under Finland's joint national application scheme in the spring will receive a letter with the admission results and the minimum score for admission to each field of study. In some fields of study, applicants placed on the waiting list may still be admitted if places open; the closing date is 2 August 2021 at 15.00.
