The four top candidates for the President recruitment of Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) have been announced. The panel discussion on 30 September 2024 included Mika Hannula, Jari Multisilta, Marja Sutela and Kirsi Viskari.

Mika Hannula is Vice President of the University of Turku and has also previously served as President of Tampere University of Technology. Jari Multisilta is President and CEO of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. Marja Sutela is Vice President for Education at Tampere University and has previously held the same position at TAMK. Kirsi Viskari is Director of Tampere Vocational College Tredu, who has previously served as Vice President for RDI at TAMK.

The panel discussion was aimed at the staff and students of the Tampere Universities community. Community members were invited to send questions and comments to the panelists in advance.

At the beginning of the panel discussion, the panelists talked about their extensive networks in Pirkanmaa and ways to promote cooperation between TAMK and working life. Important ways included RDI (research, development and innovation) activities, which generate new business and other benefits, and the education of skilled professionals for companies.

Student empowerment and well-being are topical issues. All the panelists assured that, as presidents, they keep their doors open to students and involve them in the decision-making process. In terms of promoting student well-being, the panelists highlighted the importance of guidance and quality services, among other things. There is room to strengthen a sense of community and a culture of caring for others.

The panelists were asked how they, as presidents, would strengthen psychological safety. The answers included valuing and listening to others, working together, common rules, and calm and planned activities.

In order to promote TAMK's internationality, the panelists would encourage both students and staff to take part in exchanges and to speak foreign languages, for example. Contacts with foreign universities are useful for learning new things. International students are one solution to Finland's labour shortage in the ageing population.

Finally, the panelists shared their own values as leaders. In particular, they highlighted trust in the skills of the staff, supporting and being available to the community, showing appreciation and being goal oriented.

The Board of TAMK aims to make a decision on the selection of the new President and CEO as soon as possible.
