Wastewater and Waste Engineering for Circular Economy

We develop processes and concepts for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, sludge and biowaste. In addition, we study landfill management and technologies for remediation of contaminated environments. The aim of the technology and process development is to advance circular economy to produce bioenergy and biochemicals and to recover nutrients and other materials. To develop processes and to understand the fundamentals of the processes we use our strong background in natural sciences. To accelerate the piloting, optimization and implementation of the technologies, we collaborate closely with municipalities and industries.

Research focus and goals

Our aim is to develop processes and concepts for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewaters, sludge and biowaste. In the development and optimization of the processes, we utilize our profound knowledge in biological, physical, chemical and thermal phenomena. We study the suitability of different processes and technologies for the treatment of municipal and industrial side streams. In addition, we study the behavior and management of micropollutants (e.g. microplastics and heavy metals) in different treatment processes. We also study resource-efficient methods for the remediation of contaminated sites and landfills.

We have extensive laboratory and analytical facilities that enable full characterization of the process streams, which ensures the understanding of the fundamentals and implementation of the processes in laboratory and pilot scale.

Impact

The research is funded by various sources including EU, Academy of Finland, Business Finland, industry, Ministries and foundations. Research is done in close collaboration with national and international universities and research institutes as well as with municipalities and industries.
